Splitsville: Bowling Re-imagined

Hopefully your Saturday evening plans involve bowling in celebration of National Bowling Day!

Splitsville, America’s Bowling Alley, is currently under construction at Downtown Disney® West Side in the Walt Disney World® Resort and is scheduled to open this fall. The 50,000 square feet location with 30 lanes is not your traditional bowling alley – boasting an upscale menu and retro décor, two-story layout, flat-screen TVs and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Their menu contains no gutter balls: hand-tossed pizza, fresh-rolled sushi, grilled mahi-mahi with “Voodoo” shrimp and hand-cut filets alongside some alley-classics such as cheeseburgers and crinkle-cut fries can be ordered and enjoyed right at the lane.

Unlike the other four Splitsville locations in the US, the Downtown Disney® location will have a balcony with outdoor seating along with billiard tables and live entertainment. With a size and lane capacity of almost double its sister-locations, it will be a perfect place for families to have fun and make memories outside of the theme parks.

Enjoy these artist renderings of the upcoming location and a video of Guy Revelle, the Co-Founder of Splitsville, telling us what we can expect!

New Plans for Downtown Disney

New Plans for Pleasure Island in Downtown DisneyNew dining, shopping and entertainment experiences are in the works for the Downtown Disney® area for a vibrant waterfront district called “Hyperion Wharf.”  The new district will replace the current Pleasure Island Area.

The district will come to life with a nostalgic yet modern take on an early 20th century port city and amusement pier. By day, stylish boutiques and innovative restaurants will draw you in and by night, thousands of lights will transform the area into an electric wonderland.

Taking its name from Hyperion, the Greek god of light, as well as the street on which Walt Disney built his first major animation studio, the wharf district will also feature a relaxing lakeside park and enhanced pedestrian walkways. And its diverse eateries will expand dining availability at the Downtown Disney® area by more than 25 percent.

Along with the new wharf district, other projects are underway at Downtown Disney, including:

  • An extensive renovation of Lego Imagination Center, which will increase its overall footprint by nearly 3,500 square-feet and add new Lego exterior models featuring scenes from classic Disney movies.
  • Enhancements at AMC Theatres that will take the movie-going experience at Downtown Disney to the next level with new digital technology, a Concession Stand of the Future and Florida’s first Fork & Screen Theater;
  • Numerous new or renovated retail shops and merchandise vignettes, as well as additional atmosphere entertainment, throughout Downtown Disney.

Construction on the district begins immediately and it’s scheduled to be completed in 2013.

T-Rex Cafe Roars in Downtown Disney

The Orlando Sentinel posts this report:  (http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/features_orlando/2008/10/t-rex-cafe-now.html)

Like dinosaurs? You’re definitely going to be interested in T-Rex Cafe, which opened today at Downtown Disney.

Like Rainforest Cafe? Then you’ve hit the daily double. No surprise since Landry’s Restaurants Inc. is behind both Rainforest and T-Rex. You’ll feel the vibe.

T-Rex is divided into distinct areas with their own decor, and diners can request where they’d like to sit. The idea is that it will be a different experience in Fern Forest than in your next trip in the Geo-Tech Room. Other areas are the Ice Cave, the Shark Bar in the Coral Reef Dining Room and the Sequoia Room.

We were told that you can see the meteor shower presentation from each area, but I’d have to guess that it’s best from the main Geo-Tech Room. On the other hand, it seemed louder in there and the Coral Reef, both in the front of the building. I’ll have to test the hypothesis that it’s quieter in the back (and carpeted) Fern Forest and Sequoia Room.

There are moving dinosaurs everywhere — many of them you can touch.

Bold New Vision for Downtown Disney

Walt Disney World® Resort has unveiled a new vision for the Downtown Disney® area, with extraordinary new shopping, dining and other experiences including a completely re-imagined Pleasure Island. Also planned are numerous enhancements to popular Downtown Disney locations, as well as additional theming and storytelling brought to life by Walt Disney Imagineers.

“We are committed to offering Guests new and exciting experiences they can only have at Walt Disney World® Resort,” said Downtown Disney Vice President Kevin Lansberry. “Our bold new vision for Downtown Disney reflects the feedback we receive from our Guests each and every day and will enable us to continue to offer the high-quality entertainment that is our hallmark.”

Over the next year, the 120-acre entertainment-shopping-dining complex will add a number of one-of-a-kind, immersive experiences for you to enjoy. Downtown Disney will even get its own iconic attraction, in the form of a giant, tethered balloon that will take Guests 300 feet into the air to view the amazing vistas of Walt Disney World Resort.

Other new experiences include:

  • In fall 2008, you will enter a world of prehistoric creatures at T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure. The dinosaur-themed family eatery will serve up pizzas, pastas, seafood and more, and will feature life-size animated dinosaurs that dwell among bubbling geysers, waterfalls and a fossil dig site.
  • Also this fall, a design-your-own t-shirt store from Hanes will add to the growing collection of merchandise you can personalize.
  • E-brands Restaurants, an Orlando-based, multi-concept restaurant group, will premier its newest concept in spring 2009. The high-energy, casual eatery will feature authentic Central and South American cuisine, specialty drinks and live music along the waterfront.

You also will enjoy a brand new mix of shopping and dining experiences at Pleasure Island as it is transformed over the next two years.

“Our Guests tell us they want additional shopping and dining experiences at Downtown Disney,” added Lansberry. “We are currently considering a number of unique concepts from around the globe as we re-imagine Pleasure Island and look forward to sharing our progress over the coming months.”

To make way for the new offerings, all of the clubs currently on Pleasure Island will close on Sept. 27, 2008. Other locations on Pleasure Island, including Raglan Road, Fuego by Sosa Cigars, Curl by Sammy Duval, Orlando Harley-Davidson and outdoor food and beverage locations will remain open during the transition.

To complement the new experiences, many popular Downtown Disney locations will undergo enhancements.

  • Beginning this summer, Portobello Yacht Club will be transformed into a Tuscan Country Trattoria, featuring family-style dishes and a re-designed interior and exterior, including additional outdoor seating.
  • This fall, Goofy’s Candy Company will add a special new room that will enable families to host one-of-a-kind birthday parties.
  • The Marketplace Stage will be completely replaced with a larger, covered stage this fall to welcome even more entertainment to Downtown Disney and serve as a new premier venue for Disney Magic Music Days.
  • Fulton’s Crab House will update its interior fixtures and furnishings and exterior in spring 2009.
  • Next year, Wolfgang Puck Café will update its interior fixtures and furnishings and enclose its patio with glass to enable guests to enjoy the outdoors year-round.

These efforts come on the heels of recent enhancements at World of Disney, Wolfgang Puck Express, Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop, Earl of Sandwich and Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant.
