Pandora – The World of Avatar: A Distant World Unlike Any Other

A visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park is not like a typical day in a traditional “theme park.” Instead of a park built on fantasy, Disney’s Imagineers have brought experiences that you may have in the real world and placed them inside the park’s lands, like Africa and Asia. Authenticity was and continues to be a key part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park.

In creating Pandora – The World Avatar, Imagineers took the same care in researching a realistic culture that would exist on this fictional planet. In the film AVATAR, the Na’vi people saw and respected their lush planet, an ecosystem with lush bioluminescent flora and precious fauna. Since conservation and respect for our planet Earth has been a key value of Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park since it’s opening, the tie in to Pandora – The World Avatar was an easy one. But building a real world unlike anyone had experienced before with every detailed researched proved to be more difficult.

When you cross the Discovery River via bridge from Discovery Island® to Pandora – The World Avatar, it feels like you’ve entered a rainforest. But as you continue along the path, you quickly realize through sight and sound that you’ve been transported light-years away onto a different planet. The Alpha Centauri Expeditions (ACE) Base Camp situated in The Valley of Mo’ara is where your exploration of Pandora – The World Avatar begins. With mountains that appear to float in the sky and waterfalls cascading down the mountainside into meandering streams and pools, the Valley of Mo’ara has a totally different look and feel during day and night.

Pandora – The World Avatar has two thrilling expeditions, food, beverage, and merchandise locations to enjoy, and pathways throughout the valley to hike and enjoy.

Avatar Flight of Passage

Climb aboard a winged mountain banshee as Avatar Flight of Passage launches you on an exhilarating flight through the world of Pandora. Once considered a rite of passage for the Na’vi, your flight on the banshee will be the ultimate adventure!

Na’vi River Journey

The Na’vi River Journey is a family-friendly attraction that takes you down a sacred river deep into a bioluminescent rainforest, floating past exotic glowing plants and Pandoran creatures. When you enter the musical Na’vi ceremony, the Na’vi Shaman of Songs sends positive energy into the forest through her music.

Satu’li Canteen, Pongu Pongu, and Windtraders

When hunger calls, visit the land’s Satu’li Canteen (pronounced “Sa-too-lee”), a fast-casual restaurant serving some of the healthful bounty found of Pandora, including wholesome grains, fresh vegetables, and hearty proteins. Nearby, Pongu Pongu serves out-of-this-world beverages including a bioluminescent frozen cocktail and indigenous beers and a sweet snack you won’t find elsewhere.

You’ll have an opportunity to interact with the native Na’vi  when you visit Windtraders, a shop offering Na’vi cultural items, toys, science kits and more.

It’s Beginning to Smell a Lot Like Christmas…

The Christmas season is almost upon us, and along with it comes the familiar sights, sounds and smells that transport us to joyful holiday memories.

Indeed, the smell of gingerbread is already wafting through Walt Disney World® Resort as pastry chefs all across property begin to fire up their ovens to bake the countless pieces of Christmas goodness to create their awe-inspiriting baked Christmas creations.

Throughout the Christmas season you will be able to experience these holiday delights all across Walt Disney World® Resort property. But remember, no tasting!!

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is home to the Gingerbread Holiday Castle which is already currently on display. Inspired by Disney’s “Frozen” with the feel of it’s a small world the castle made of sugar snowflakes, gingerbread shingles and chocolate-coated trees boasts 16 different Hidden Olafs! The Gingerbread Holiday Castle can be found on the fourth floor in the Grand Canyon Concourse.

Yesterday the largest gingerbread house on property was unveiled inside the lobby of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Not only will you get to admire this grand gingerbread creation made from 800 pounds of flour and 1,050 pounds of honey; every day (except for Sundays) there will be gingerbread house decorating demonstrations in the lobby! Also don’t forget to pick up your gingerbread house collectible pin featuring “Alice in Wonderland”.

Just in time for the post-election season, Epcot’s American Adventure pavilion will feature a tasty recreation of the United States Capital Building beginning November 25th. Joining the US Capital Building this year will also be the Lincoln Memorial. Don’t forget to look for the five Hidden Mickeys in the display!

Tusker House Restaurant joins in with a creation of its own inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Park with an African-inspired Marketplace in its lobby beginning November 24th.

One of our favorites, The Holiday Carousel, will be back at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts in the “Beach-side” lobby again in 2016. This life-size spinning carousel is sure to delight both children and adults alike! You will want to be sure to find one or all of the 17 Hidden Mickeys; and don’t forget to pick up a limited-edition pin as well! Once you are done, swing over to the Yacht-side to see the Holiday Village and Miniature Train!

Disney’s BoardWalk Resort is taking gingerbread houses to the next level with “Gingerbread Academy”; an exciting opportunity for you to build your own gingerbread house to take home! If you’d prefer, there is also an opportunity to decorate a gingerbread cooking instead. “Gingerbread Academy” is $125.00 for up to four guests and cookie decorating is simply $8.95 per cookie ornament. Afterwards you can experience the lobby of Disney’s BoardWalk Resort which features gingerbread houses decorated by pastry chefs of the resort.

Breaking the Myths – Visiting During Peak Dates

With the holidays quickly approaching, crowds at the Walt Disney World® and Disneyland® Resort will increase day by day. Today, we continue our “Breaking the Myths” series by focusing on visits during peak travel dates.

  1. Myth: Since I have purchased my ticket in advance, I don’t have to worry about capacity due to crowds during peak times
During peak travel times, the Walt Disney World® Resort uses a phased closure system to ensure the safety and comfort of their guests and cast members inside the parks. While the specific details of the program remain internal and confidential, the 4-phase program limits the type of guests entering that park for the day. For example, in a Phase 2 closure, guests not staying at a Walt Disney World® Resort Hotel may be denied access to the park at the gates due to capacity. At Phase 4, all guests are denied entry until capacity levels decrease. It is important to note that while guests staying at a Walt Disney World® Resort Hotel are guaranteed entry into a park with valid admission, it may not be the park you had planned for the day – you may have to choose from one of the other theme parks.
  2. Myth: It’s best to not have reservations or plans when traveling during peak times
While some guests enjoy having the flexibility of “going with the flow” on vacation, peak travel times may not be the time to try it. Table service meals start booking 180 days in advance, so the likelihood of getting a walk up reservation can be slim. If you are set on dining at a specific restaurant or having your child experience things like Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or The Pirates League, then you definitely want to work with your Magic Maker® and see what advanced reservations are available.
  3. Myth: Since New Year’s Eve is such a late night, it is best to get a late start
On a day that the parks may reach capacity, getting a “late” start can be detrimental to your plans. Our suggestion is to plan on spending the day at one park (don’t hop) and arrive early. Additional entertainment will often be added around the parks during peak times for you to enjoy. Even at a busy park, a solid touring plan can make for a magical day full of memories!

Guests can expect peak travel times at the Walt Disney World® and Disneyland® Resort around the holidays (Christmas, New Year’s, Easter, 4th of July) and during other special events attracting large crowds. By utilizing the tips and services of your Magic Maker®, your upcoming trip will be Magical!
