45 Years of Voyages on Pirates of the Caribbean®

45 years ago today, guests at the Disneyland® Park took the first ride on the Pirates of the Caribbean® attraction. Since its opening on March 18, 1967, it has become a guest favorite and a version of it can now be found in 4 Disney Theme Parks.

In honor of its birthday, enjoy some Pirates of the Caribbean® factoids on us!

  • The original Pirates of the Caribbean® attraction in Disneyland® Park is the last attraction that Walt helped design. He passed 3-months before it’s opening.
  • Written in 1967 by George Bruns and Xavier Atencio, “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)” is the Pirates of the Caribbean® attraction’s theme song.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean® attraction was not part of the original plans for Magic Kingdom® Park. It was believed that because of Florida’s close proximity to the Caribbean, there would be little interest. Due to high guest demand, the attraction was quickly built and opened by the end of 1973.
  • In the queue of Pirates of the Caribbean® at Magic Kingdom® Park, guest will find two skeletons locked in a cell playing chess who are stuck in a stalemate.
  • At Disneyland® Park, guests can eat at the Blue Bayou which overlooks the opening to Pirates of the Caribbean®
  • The attraction at 3 Disney Parks include references to Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa and the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. All three include the smoke/waterfall effect with projections of:
    • Davy Jones and Blackbeard, alternately, at Disneyland® Park
    • Blackbeard at Magic Kingdom® Park at Walt Disney World® Resort
    • Davy Jones at Tokyo Disneyland®
  • The Pirates of the Caribbean® attraction can be found inside the Adventureland® Area at Magic Kingdom® Park, Tokyo Disneyland®, and Disneyland® Paris. Disneyland® Park is the only place you will find it in a different land – New Orleans Square.

Disney California Adventure® Park’s Expansion Soon to be Complete

Disney's California Adventure ParkDisneyland® Resort has announced that both Cars Land and Buena Vista Street will open to the public on June 15th, bringing the five-year expansion of Disney California Adventure® Park to an end. This expansion brings a whole new look to Disney California Adventure® Park and gives its guests an opportunity to explore 8 different lands: “a bug’s land,” Buena Vista Street, Condor Flats, Grizzly Peak, Hollywood Land, Pacific Wharf, Paradise Pier, and the much anticipated Cars Land.

Buena Vista Street resembles what Walt would have seen when he first moved to Hollywood in 1923. Buena Vista Street will be the home of the new Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge as well as various shops and will feature red car trolleys traveling the length of it.

Cars Land will bring the town of Radiator Springs from the Disney·Pixar movie Cars to life. Cars Land will feature 3 new attractions – Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, Luigi’s Flying Tires, and Radiator Springs Racers. Guests will be able to ‘fill up’ their empty stomachs at Flo’s V8 Café, Fillmore’s Taste-In,  and the Cozy Cone Motel.

Disney California Adventure® Park will be closed to guests on June 14th so that final preparations can be made to the park. Disneyland® Park and the Downtown Disney® District will operate normally on that day.

Disney Fans Worldwide Mourn the Loss of a Disney Legend

If you have ever visited a Disney Park, it is likely you have been exposed to several songs composed by the Sherman Brothers. Their songs conjure childhood memories for many and their lyrics are stuck in the minds of millions.

Disney Legend Robert Sherman has sadly passed in London at the age of 86. Picked by Walt Disney himself, Robert and his surviving brother, Disney Legend Richard Sherman, composed many songs used by Disney in several Disney movies, animations, and theme park attractions.

Some of the major projects the Sherman Brothers’ worked on are:

  • Film Scores for:
    • The Parent Trap
    • The Sword in the Stone
    • Mary Poppins
    • The Jungle Book
    • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
    • The Aristocats
    • Bedknobs and Broomsticks
    • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Theme Park Attractions:
    • Walt Disney’s Carousel of ProgressThere’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow
    • Journey into Imagination with FigmentOne Little Spark
    • “it’s a small world”® Attraction – it’s a small world (after all)
    • Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki RoomThe Tiki Tiki Tiki Room

Robert’s son, Jeffery Sherman, spoke of his father saying  that he “wanted to bring happiness to the world and, unquestionably, he succeeded.” When you find yourself humming the tune of one of their songs throughout the rest of your day, we are sure you will agree!
