Hidden Mickeys

By: Christie Howley, Magic Maker®

If you are taking a trip to Walt Disney World® Resort, you probably expect to see Mickey Mouse and his friends just about everywhere you look. But did you know that Mickey Mouse may be hiding in places you wouldn’t think to look? There’s a phenomenon called “Hidden Mickeys”, and they’re bound to make your trip even more exciting!

What is a Hidden Mickey you ask? Disney Imagineers and most creative artists have put their heads together to sneak partial or full images of Mickey Mouse (and sometimes even other characters) into areas of the Walt Disney World® Resort property that you may not expect to find him, and some may not be so easy to see! The history of Hidden Mickeys (explained by a cast member during a back stage tour) began when Epcot® was in creation in 1981. The Imagineers did not want to display Mickey Mouse in the Epcot®. They believed that he should remain a fixture at the Magic Kingdom® Park, while Epcot® was intended to transport guests into a futuristic world- sans Mickey Mouse. Some cast members felt differently, however, and during the opening of the park, snuck Mickey Mouse’s trademark three-circled head and ears into the background of certain attractions and rides. Guests and other cast members noticed, and began to look for them and the movement took off!

Now, Mickey Mouse’s iconic head and ears are not the only Hidden Mickey to be on the lookout for, though they do remain the “Classic” Hidden Mickey. Hidden Mickeys come in all shapes, sizes, characters and forms, some being as difficult to see as the full body Hidden Mickey laying on his side in the clouds, in one of the final scenes in Splash Mountain® Attraction. Or if you happen to stop by the Disney’s Polynesian Resort, head upstairs to Kona Island, coffee shop by day, sushi bar by night. The counter is made up of colored tiles…see if you can find the one shaped like Mickey!

An example of a non-Mickey Mouse Hidden Mickey can be found on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. While in Owl’s house, search for a picture frame of Mr. Toad, who used to have his very own ride in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh’s location many years ago.

There are some Hidden Mickeys that can only be found while waiting on line for the rides, so if you happen to have a FastPass+ you may miss one or two. But don’t worry, there are more Hidden Mickeys buried throughout all 4 parks (and the water parks!), the resorts, and even some restaurants! If you need help finding some, most cast members have a pretty good idea of where you can spot them. But don’t forget that they’re hidden-intentionally placed Mickeys (such as a cookie shaped like Mickey Mouse in the bakery) do not count. Use your imagination, get the kids to join in, and celebrate that now there’s one more reason to go to Walt Disney World® Resort- to go hunting Hidden Mickeys!

With some fabulous specials available at Walt Disney World® Resort, our Magic Makers® are ready to send you hunting!

Walt Disney World® Resort Lights Up the Sky

Let us be the first to tell you Happy Independence Day, one day early! We say thank you to those of you reading this that have served, or are presently serving our nation. Beyond celebrating our freedom as Americans, one of my favorite things about the 4th of July is the fireworks; big, loud, colorful, booming fireworks. I always feel like a kid again when ‘oohing and ahhing’ the beautiful bursts of color in the sky.

If you are a firework lover as me, then Walt Disney World® Resort doesn’t disappoint. In fact, regularly the sky above Walt Disney World® Resort comes alive with nightly displays from Magic Kingdom® Park and Epcot®.

Epcot® is home to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth whose stage is the World Showcase Lagoon, a man-made lake in the middle of World Showcase. The current IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth is a 14 minute show whose current format was introduced in 2000. Then titled as IlllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth, the ‘2000’ was dropped from the name and the show continues today as it did in 2000 due to its popularity

As with any Walt Disney World® Resort attraction IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth builds up to the main event with a pre-show. About 30 minutes prior to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, a music loop begins in World Showcase consisting of 9 tracks. Each country plays the same base tracks, with musical accents from each particular nation in World Showcase. If you aren’t already waiting at this point, this is your queue to find the perfect viewing spot!

We don’t want to give too much of the show away; but we will tell you that Illuminations: Reflections of Earth is divided into three different acts, telling the story of our planet. The three acts are chaos, order and meaning. The story unfolds through a remarkable journey of fireworks, laser lights, pyro techniques, and fountains. IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth can be viewed anywhere around World Showcase that you have a view of the World Showcase Lagoon!

Wishes FireworksWishes fireworks show finds its home in Magic Kingdom® Park. Wishes fireworks show replaced Fantasy in the Sky in 2003. Fantasy in the Sky was the opening day show at Magic Kingdom® Park in 1971, and ran consistently through 2003 prior to its replacement.

Wishes fireworks show, which is hosted by Jiminy Cricket together with Blue Fairy, is so much more than a fireworks show. As brilliant colors wash over Cinderella Castle in the foreground, the sky comes alive behind it in the telling of a breathtaking story set to an unforgettable musical score. As Walt Disney World® Resort puts it, ‘it is a spectacular story, so big only the sky can hold it!’

While there are several places to view Wishes fireworks show from, there are few viewing locations that can compare to watching from Main Street, U.S.A.® Area. Sure, it can be crowded and you have to set up ‘early’ to stake your ground, but there is nothing like watching Wishes fireworks show where it was designed to be watch. It is breathtaking.

IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth can be viewed at 9:00pm nightly in Epcot® unless otherwise noted. The time for Wishes fireworks show can vary based upon park hours and is not displayed every night, so be sure to check your times guide or ask your Magic Maker® prior to traveling!

As always, we are eager to help you create a magical, memorable vacation. Contact us today about some of the incredible packages and savings available for your next trip to Walt Disney World® Resort!

Making Memories Together

World of ColorLast November my family finally got to check off something that is on every Disneyphile’s bucket-list, a visit to Disneyland® Resort in Anaheim.

It was amazing.

We got to walk in Walt’s footsteps down Main Street, U.S.A. We were able to see the bench that Walt sat on when he ‘dreamed up’ this magical place while sitting in Griffith Park. We rode a loop around Disneyland® Park in the Lilly Belle train car. We were able to see the small Christmas tree lit in the window of Walt’s apartment over the Disneyland Fire Dept.

For a Disney nerd like me, it was all so surreal.

We spent 7 days at Disneyland® Resort; immersed in Disneyland® Park, Disney California Adventure® Park, Downtown Disney® District and the resorts. We took a back-stage tour in Disneyland® Park and enjoyed an amazing dining experience at Carthay Circle Restaurant. As an agency we even had private access to Cars Land and Radiator Springs Racers prior to the park opening one morning.

It was a dream trip.

Of all of the amazing experiences we had, by far my favorite moment of the trip was sitting on the ground, as a family, in Disney California Adventure® Park eating dinner next to a row of dirty strollers.

It was magical.

Disney California Adventure® Park has a remarkable show called World of Color. It is a fantastic display of lights, water, projection and fire; all orchestrated in a way only Disney Destinations can do. The best seats in the house are reserved for FastPass holders for the show, and beyond the FastPass viewing areas the seats with views are very limited.

To ensure that we had the best spot possible without a FastPass, we set up camp about an hour and a half prior to the show in a stroller ‘parking lot’. Once we set up camp, I trekked across the park to hunt down and drag home ‘supper’ for my family.

Up until this point our entire trip had been non-stop. Meals were rushed. Bathroom breaks were rushed. Snacks were rushed. All in a pursuit of conquering all that we could while we were at Disneyland.

Micah on the PierSo, following 7 days of intensity, here we sat as a family, dining on paper plates with plastic utensils…on the ground…in the middle of a theme park. This was our last night at Disneyland® Resort.

Our view consisted of the white rails in front of us, the dirty strollers beside us, and the knees and shins of other families pushing on with the same intensity we used all week.

We were together. We were talking and reflecting. We were still.

It was good, it was real good.

As we talked, we all recollected our favorite things we’d seen or done over the week. Micah, our five year old, was very quick to announce that sitting on the ground eating together was one of his favorite ‘things’ we did on our trip.

We exposed him to so many things that many five year olds would have loved to have done. He was on a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip by many families’ standards. He met the Fab 5, he rode all the rides he wanted, he drank way too much coke and ate way too much sugar.

Still, his standout, was sitting on the ground, as a family. Eating. Sharing. Laughing.

It was ours too.

The entertainment and magic of a Disney Destination vacation is undeniable…but the treasured memories families make together every day at Disney Destinations are priceless.

Our Magic Makers® are eager to help you create a lifetime of magical memories with your family and friends, too!
