Walt Disney World News

Sum of All Thrills

In a recent trip to Walt Disney World® Resort, our owner, Chet, was able to give the newest Disney Innovention, Sum of All Thrills™, a test run.  An exhibit located at Innoventions East Building in Epcot® gives guests a chance to design their perfect thrill ride.

Sum of All Thrills™ will test your imagination.  An interactive touch screen lets guests determine height and speed while adding features such as dips and corkscrew turns to the virtual roller coaster, bobsled track or plane ride.  Designs are created using a digital ruler and pre-selected track options to construct the rides. If a guest tries to build something physically impossible  then they’re asked to retool their ideas.

Once the ride is completed on screen it is time to climb aboard the 4-D robotic simulator that uses sight, sound and movement to give you a realistic experience.  The robotic carriage uses virtual-reality technology to help guests experience the ride they just created.  With their legs and arms outside the ride, guests watch a video version of their ride while the robotic arm moves from side to side, up and down, and will even flip guests upside down to simulate the feeling of a real roller coaster. Fans blow air at the riders at various speeds to give guests the sensation that they are moving forward.

Sum of All Thrills™ is perfect for any thrill junkie of any age*!  And don’t worry, if you get a little carried away with your design, you can always hit the “Oh, no!” button during the ride to stop the simulation.

*Height restrictions are 48 inches, unless you’ve picked an inversion. Then riders must be at least 54 inches tall.

Main Street Electrical Parade Lights the Night Again

The “Main Street Electrical Parade” lights up the streets of the Magic Kingdom® Park and headlines a season of after-dark excitement coming to Walt Disney World® Resort.

“After the sun goes down, our Walt Disney World® parks will light up the night with ‘Summer Nightastic!’, ” announced Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World® Resort.

Magic will shine and shimmer in a whole new light.  Here’s a look around:

  • With floats and characters appearing for the first time at Walt Disney World® Resort, Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” returns with its joyous sights and sounds.  Direct from the Disneyland® Resort and marking its first engagement in Florida since 2001, the cherished parade will be led by Tinker Bell waving from the basket of a magical balloon aboard a new float.  Pinocchio and Snow White join the parade this summer, aboard bright new floats.  Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” is set for its summer-long nighttime premiere in early June at Magic Kingdom.
  • The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror welcomes drop-ins this summer with even more pulse-racing surprises.  New lighting effects and the addition of a new drop sequence, created especially for “Summer Nightastic!”, will bring unexpected frights to guests who step into that infamous service elevator.  If they dare.
  • What could be more summery than fireworks on a star-studded night?  Magic Kingdom will treat guests to a special summer fireworks spectacular.  The night sky will explode in vivid colors and brilliant visual effects as whimsical music fills the air.
  • Other fun!  The return of the Sounds Like Summer concert series to Epcot® and extended evening hours at Disney’s Animal Kingdom™ Park several times a week add up to summer fun as only Disney can do – at all four Walt Disney World theme parks.

Don’t want to miss these great attractions!

  1. Stay Out Late
Staying out at night holds a special magic for teens. As a Disney Resort Guest, you’ll enjoy the Extra Magic Hours Benefit. The parks will be transformed by the night-lights and you’ll enjoy shorter lines into the wee hours of morning!
  2. Conquer Mountains
Thrills and chills await the brave at The Magic Kingdom® Park’s Space Mountain, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park’s Summit Plummet, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom™ Park’s Expedition Everest. And while you’re at it, we dare you to ride The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ – a “haunted” elevator drop at Disney’s Hollywood Studios™!
  3. Get your Goofy on!
You’re browsing a gift shop and your son hands you a Goofy Ear hat to wear. Reply, “I will if you will!” (and take pictures!) Where else can you be this silly and fit right in?
  4. Swim under a volcano
The Walt Disney World® Resorts feature themed heated pools with features like fountains, slides, and waterfalls. Jump in or lounge by the pool with a snack while you soak up some Florida sun!
  5. Shop at the Downtown Disney® Area.
Design your own candy-coated pretzel, make a custom T-shirt, and check out latest junior styles at Trend-D. Fan Boys will be at home in the huge Star Wars gift shop in Disney’s Hollywood Studios™! Anime lovers will want to set aside at least an hour to peruse the Japanese Pavilion store at Epcot®!
  6. Walk around the World at Epcot’s World Showcase
Why not have appetizers in Mexico, dinner in Germany and dessert in France? My 14 year old daughter and I kicked it up a notch last summer by buying a piece of candy from each country – the perfect “we miss Mickey” snack for our return home!
  7. Have lunch with a Disney Imagineer!
This is a little known opportunity your teen will never forget. You and a small group of guests will have a private lunch with a real Disney Imagineer at the Brown Derby Restaurant of Disney’s Hollywood Studios™ and learn insider stories and tips for what it takes to make Disney magic!
  8. Bond with the Fam.
Team up for a kid vs. parent laser showdown in Buzz Lightyear’s Ranger Spin, practice making pirate faces in line for The Pirates of the Caribbean, or let your daughter escort her little sister to meet Minnie Mouse.
  9. Play with Tomorrow’s Video Game Technology
Only at DisneyQuest® Indoor Interactive Theme Park, a 5-story cutting edge arcade – a gamer’s paradise that only Disney could create.
  10. Just Chill
Have some down time in the happiest place on Earth! Watch fireworks from the beach of Disney’s Polynesian Resort, enjoy a spa treatment, have funnel cake on Disney’s Boardwalk, or find a bench and just people watch at Cinderella’s Castle.

Pizzeria to Open at Epcot’s Italy Pavilion

An authentic pizzeria will be opening at Italy Pavilion at Epcot later this year!

The new 300-seat restaurant will have traditional Florentine architecture, vaulted-ceilings and outside dining. And the food will be authentic with Italian dishes (complimenting the offerings at Tutto Italia ) and pizza from wood-burning ovens.

The pizzeria will be the newest flagship restaurant in the Patina Restaurant Group’s portfolio. And one of the special touches at the Epcot location will be the water. It’ll be imported from a source where the composition most resembles water used in Naples, Italy, to make the authentic Italian dough.

A name for the family-style pizzeria has not been finalized as of yet.  Construction is currently underway and the restaurant is scheduled to open in fall 2010.  Can’t wait to check it out?  Click here to start planning your Walt Disney World Vacation now!

The Pirates League at the Walt Disney World Resort

Pirates League at the Walt Disney World Resort

From Magic Maker® Traci Elswick

“Yo ho, yo ho! A pirate’s life for me!” The Pirates League is a great alternative for boys or girls who wish for a pirate inspired makeover. The Pirates League is located next to the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction in the Magic Kingdom® Park at the Walt Disney World® Resort. I took my 7 year old son, Joel, during our recent Halloween Walt Disney World® Resort vacation. Boy, were we impressed!

First, the pirates gave him his pirate name: “Jeffery Blade Cutter” from the Pirate log, and then he had the choice of several different pirate looks. Joel and I were whisked away to the Muster Station, for applications of beards and eye patches, scarves and scars, earrings and gold teeth – all done with the savvy skill of a veteran pirate. Our pirate took the time to explain what they were doing to him and let him feel the brushes and sponges. Before you knew it he was transformed into a cursed pirate. Every time a makeover was complete the pirates would ring a bell and announce, “We have a new pirate”.

When Joel was done they made him take the sacred pirate oath. He then was taken to the secret room where the transformation was complete. He got to reveal the hidden treasure. Don’t ask, we were sworn to secrecy! No cameras are allowed in the secret room.
You can choose from three daily pirate packages:

  • First Mate Package: Includes bandana; choice of facial effects; scars; tattoos; fake teeth; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace; one 5×7-inch photo; and personalized pirate oath. – $49.95 USD plus tax
  • Empress Package: Includes bandana; shimmering makeup; face gem; tattoos; nail polish; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace; one 5×7-inch photo; and personalized pirate oath. – $49.95 USD plus tax
