Go Under the Sea with Ariel

Review of The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure

by Magic Maker® Larilyn Hanson

The Little Mermaid - Ariel's Undersea AdventureFor over two decades, little girls have watched as Ariel sang about her desire to be part of our world.  Teens and young adults empathized with her heartache and yearned for Ariel to achieve her dream.  How wonderful would it be if she was able to spend her happily ever after with the prince of her dreams?  They wanted her to become part of our world and share in the experiences that we have.  How many of these same little girls do you think have wanted to be able to spend time discovering Ariel’s under water world?

Well now every mermaid lover, young or old, can have their chance.  At the Disney California Adventure® Park at the Disneyland® Resort, there is a brand new ride that opened in June.  The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure is a dark ride, similar to the original ones found in Fantasyland®, where the guest can embark on a journey through a life size storytelling of one of their favorite fairy tales.  As guests wait in line, everything from the sea shells atop the railing posts to the shimmering shells embedded into the cement walk way let you know that this is going to be an experience that completely transports you away from Paradise Pier.

Once inside the main building, guests board consistently moving pastel colored clam shell cars (think Haunted Mansion style).  As you settle into your seat and travel forward, you hear Scuttle beginning to tell the tale that is so familiar to most of us.  Then your shell starts to dip back as you are “submerged” into the ocean and see this story come to life before your eyes.  You travel through the grotto, filled with gadgets and gizmos aplenty!  You take a turn amongst Sebastian and all of his musically inclined fishy friends singing about life under the sea.  And then you come upon one of the most amazing audio animatronic figures that Disney Imagineers have ever created when you come face to face with that monstrous sea-witch:  Ursula!  Her movement is so fluid and lifelike, you really feel as if you are in the middle of the movie!  The Imagineers who worked on this ride definitely outdid themselves.

The story continues to unfold, and there are many more things to see.  As the familiar songs are sung, you can hardly keep yourself from singing aloud.  It really reminds you why so many people fell in love with the Disney telling of this story to begin with.  The ride ends with all of the characters waving goodbye and sending you back out into the real world.    Don’t be surprised if once you exit the ride, everyone wants to head right back in!  The magic that can be found within this beautifully executed ride is almost tangible.

And what better way to conclude this journey into Ariel’s world?  Take the short walk across the pier and dine with her and many other Disney Princesses at Ariel’s Grotto!  This is sure to become a can’t miss duo for many families and little girls!

New Parade for Disneyland Park

Mickey's Soundstational Parade

A new parade, Mickey’s Soundsational Parade, will stomp, clang and drum its way to Disneyland® Park next year.

Here is the first preview of the artwork for Mickey’s Soundsational Parade. It gives you a glimpse of the vibrant colors and exciting array of Disney characters that may appear on the streets of Disneyland® Park in 2011.  Mickey and friends are joined by incredible cast including Mary Poppins, the Three Caballeros, Simba and friends, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, Aladdin, and, of course, all of your favorite princesses plus the newest one, Rapunzel.

Plus, there are a whole lot of exciting elements for the new parade that can’t be captured in this artwork:

  • The parade is an explosive music festival with thrilling rhythms and bold percussion that will bring to life some of the most beloved melodies from Disney films.
  • Live musicians will amplify the fun. Mickey Mouse and some of your favorite Disney characters will play live and will encourage members of the crowd to join a giant jam session.
  • Lively dancers will stomp out rhythms as a syncopated drum line, twinkling cymbals, steel drums and more entertain guests with sensational sounds!

The parade promises to be the most foot-stomping, infectious festival of music you’ve ever seen — or heard!  It’s “soundsational!”

Disneyland Hotel Makeover

Details and concept art have been released that will give the Disneyland® Hotel in California a fun, fresh makeover. The pool area is getting a whole new look, including a brand-new pool, all-new immersive water play area and a complete redesign of the Never Land Pool. Plans also call for a new restaurant and bar, and re-theming of the hotel’s three guest room towers.

Pool TransformationsDisneyland Pool Concept Art
The biggest transformation are the changes coming to the pool area. With a nod to the iconic original park signage, Disneyland will be spelled out in familiar blocks atop a platform supporting two huge water slides. Reminiscent of the original Monorail station at the Disneyland Hotel, at each slide’s entrance will sit a replica Monorail Car that guests will glide through as they twist and turn their way to the pool below. The pool will also feature a third, two-lane mini slide, perfect for little ones.

The Never Land Pool will receive a complete cosmetic makeover but will retain its unique shape. A new, four-foot deep pool will be built between the Never Land Pool and the water play area. A footbridge will stretch over this new pool, connecting both sides of the courtyard area and giving easy access across the property. Six new cabanas will also be added.  The new water play area and pool are scheduled to be completed by summer 2011, and the remodeled Never Land Pool is slated to be completed by summer 2012.

New Dining Locations
Two new dining locations will be introduced in the current location of Hook’s Pointe, Croc’s Bites and Bits, the Wine Cellar and the Lost Bar. A new smart casual dining concept will feature Tahitian architecture that is reminiscent of the ’50s and ’60s era of the hotel and the original Tahitian Terrace restaurant in Disneyland park. A new bar will draw on the adventure theme from the Jungle Cruise attraction.  These are scheduled to be completed Summer 2011.

Hotel Guest Rooms
The hotel’s three guest room towers will be renamed to reflect Disneyland® park’s distinctive lands. The Dreams Tower, currently under renovation and scheduled to be completed in 2010, will become the Adventure Tower. The Wonder Tower, next to undergo transformation and slated for completion in 2011, will be the Frontier Tower, and the Magic Tower, which will be finished in 2012, will become the Fantasy Tower. A large marquee featuring classic artwork for Adventureland, Frontierland and Fantasyland will identify each tower.
