Experience the Magic of the Islands

By Magic Maker® Heather Rodgers

Many of us dream of taking time out of our busy schedules to visit paradise and to many of us that destination would include Hawaii. My family recently had the opportunity to do just that and decided that we would spend our time on the island of Oahu to visit some of the most talked about locations in Hawaii including Pearl Harbor, North Shore, Waikiki, and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. We decided that we would spend part of our trip on the shores of Waikiki and end our trip by staying at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa.

We stayed in a nice resort on Waikiki beach and enjoyed our time there but it was not the relaxing experience we were hoping for there on Waikiki. We moved over to Aulani for the last few days of our trip and found the differences between Ko Olina and Waikiki to be drastic.

Once we arrived at Aulani, we truly wished we had stayed here for our entire trip. It was so much quieter and laid back in Ko Olina. Aulani was the paradise we were looking for in our vacation. From the moment we arrived we were able to truly begin relaxing, which was just one of the reasons why we chose to travel to Hawaii for this family vacation. At our resort on Waikiki, the check-in process was completely chaotic from crowd control to wait times just trying to get the key to our room. At our arrival to Aulani, we immediately had help to ensure a smooth check-in process. Furthermore, Aulani had something for everyone in our family between the kid’s club activities, spa treatments, and beach activities on property. We were able to have a few hours together as a couple, while the kids spent time at Aunty’s Beach House, and we were able to make many family memories on the beach and attending the several entertainment and cultural options that Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa includes in your stay.

Quite honestly my husband was hesitant about staying at a Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa because as much as we love Disney, he feared being surrounded by Disney characters and theme park like attractions. From the moment we stepped out of our car at Aulani we knew those fears would not be realized. Instead Aulani has all the touches of elegance, respect to the Hawaiian culture, and customer service that Disney Destinations are known for without the feel of a theme park experience. Aulani is everything you would hope for in a Disney Destination and it truly surpassed our expectations.

There is no better way to experience the magic of the islands than through the magic of Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. Your Magic Maker® is ready to make your tropical dreams a reality!

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa: What’s Included?

Recently, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai‘i was named the “Top Family Hotel in the U.S.” by Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2014! For any guest that has visited the resort, it is easy to understand how it would receive such accolades. But for someone who has yet to experience Aulani, you may wonder what makes it any different than many of Hawai‘i’s other beautiful resorts.

Located outside of the crowds of Waikiki, Aulani is an island retreat like no other! But it is the immersive Hawaiian traditions and wide range of all-inclusive activities and amenities that make the difference.

Expansion Plans Announced for Aulani

Aulani overviewAulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii announced Thursday an expansion of their offerings to their guests.

The expansion will add on to their current Waikolohe Valley pool area. Guests will enjoy an additional pool, toddler pool and interactive water play area. During this pool area growth, many of the current Waikolohe Valley amenities will remain open—including Waikolohe Pool, the lazy river, slides, whirlpool spas, Rainbow Reef and Menehune Bridge.  However, the Wailana Pool (the quiet pool) and Wailana Bar will close for an extended period and the Makai Preserve will close permanently this fall.

Because of the popularity of the Starlit Hui show, an evening show with a blend of traditional Hawaiian and modern entertainment, it will move to a larger venue. The show will go on an approximately one month hiatus while it relocates.

Also planned is two new quick service dining locations for the resort.

Construction for all of these projects is scheduled to begin September 2012 and finish mid-2013. We will bring you more information as additional details of the expansion become available.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa – A Little Slice of Paradise

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa.By Magic Maker Heather Straight

It’s hard to say who was more excited about visiting Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa on the island of Oahu in Hawaii – me and my husband, or our two young boys. Certainly my husband and I had always put a visit to Hawaii high on our travel “Bucket List,” and our boys, ages eight and five, had been hooked from the first look they had of pictures of the lazy river, the water slides, the pools and the many water play areas. From the moment we stepped off the plane in Honolulu, and were greeted with smiles and fragrant lei in the Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa lobby, we knew we were in for the vacation of a lifetime.

Everything about Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa tells a story – the story of Hawaii, its people, its culture, its landscapes – and it’s all done with an attention to detail that Disney does so well. From the exquisite murals lining the beautiful lobby to the colorful photos taken by local Hawaiian children that form a work of art behind the front desk, from the sweeping views of the Pacific ocean on one side to the volcanic mountains on the other, everywhere you turn you immersed in the beauty and history of the Hawaiian islands. Combined with the exceptional service that they are known for, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa is a truly remarkable family vacation destination.

The boys divided their time between Aunty’s Beach House and the Waikolohe Valley. Aunty’s Beach House is a major family perk of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, a complimentary kids’ club for children ages three and up, staffed with excellent, well-trained youth counselors that keep children engaged and safe. Aunty’s Beach House features areas for dress-up and imaginative play, arts and crafts, computers, a TV room, an outdoor play area, a magical fireplace for storytelling, and much more. Kids can make volcanoes erupt or concoct “Space Goo” with Stitch, and several premium programs are available for an additional fee. Our boys did Aunty’s Make Believe Magic, a half-day program that included lunch and a magical treasure hunt through Aunty’s Beach House.

The Waikolohe Valley is essentially a 7-acre water park, with pools, slides and a lazy river surrounding the centerpiece, the Pu’u Kilo Volcano. Our whole family spent hours floating on the lazy river, swimming in the pools, rocketing down the water slides, basking in the sun and searching for hidden animals and sea life carved into the sides of Pu’u Kilo Volcano. It was nearly impossible to draw our youngest away from the Menehune Bridge, an immense water play area inhabited by the mischievous “menehune” – the Hawaiian equivalent of a leprechaun. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy could be found hosting poolside parties, and Chip and Dale made regular appearances at Rainbow Reef, the man-made snorkeling lagoon full of colorful fish where the whole family can try their hand at snorkeling.

One afternoon while the boys were playing at Aunty’s Beach House, my husband and I visited the Lani Wai Spa for Lomi Lomi massages (a Hawaiian technique using hot stones and a special massage stick carved from the lomi lomi tree) and relaxation in the outdoor hydrotherapy garden. I consider myself something of a spa connoisseur, and try to fit in a spa visit on every vacation. Lani Wai Spa was easily the most amazing spa experience I’ve ever had, from pools and showers in the hydrotherapy garden to the excellent facilities in the locker and relaxation rooms. I highly recommend the Lomi Lomi massage, a very relaxing experience.

The Pau Hana Room, the community room, offers complimentary daily Hawaiian craft classes (we made floral lei, fern bracelets, kukui nut bracelets and sea turtle pendants) as well as a place for the family to play Wii or Playstation games, catch a movie, send home a video post card or learn the basics of hula. It’s also the place to pick up a hand-held device (similar to an iPhone) and set off on the Menehune Adventure Trail, an interactive adventure through the grounds of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa.

While we did set off for adventures around Oahu, such as Pearl Harbor and the North Shore, we could have easily stayed our entire week at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa and never been bored. Playing on the beach with sand toys and boogie boards (complimentary for Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa guests), stand-up paddleboard and outrigger rentals, and a host of excursions offered by Adventures by Disney have something for all ages. Nightly story telling, star gazing, and an amazing show called the Starlit Hui carry the entertainment well into the evening hours.

I could go on and on for pages and pages about Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, the service, the food, the spacious and comfortable rooms, the friendly and helpful Cast Members, the adventures and more, and still not be finished describing what was, so far, the most magical family vacation we’ve ever taken.

The highest compliment I can pay is this – scarcely a day goes by that my boys (and often my husband!) don’t ask when we’ll be going back to Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa.

Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort

From Magic Maker® Kevin GallagherDisney's Hilton Head Island Resort

WELCOME HOME

That’s what the sign says as you enter Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort.  After about five minutes on site that’s exactly how you feel – like you’re at home!!  Nestled among the Spanish moss laden Oaks and the gorgeous scenic marshes, one can easily get swept away into a magnificent world laced with history and in communion with nature.

The rooms reflect the beautiful Carolina architecture and recall the fishing and hunting resorts of the 1940’s.  Whether enjoying a Grand Villa, a two or one-bedroom villa, or simply staying in the studio, all of the accommodations continue the story and provide a warm and relaxing environment from which the guests can enjoy all of the wonders the resort has to offer.  All of the rooms have a balcony from which to enjoy either an inland view or a marsh view.  All of the rooms except for the studios have a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and a whirlpool tub providing all the comforts of home.

Activities are abundant at the resort as well.  With a large pool, a giant water slide, a toddler pool, and a hot tub there is no shortage of places to just get your feet wet.  Add in the 12-miles of beach and additional pool at the beach-house and hours of watery enjoyment are to be had.  If that’s not enough, guests can also enjoy a variety of wonderful nature excursions – including dolphin tours along Broad Creek – by both boat and kayak!!  Bike rentals and kayak rentals are also available.  As for the kids, the recreation department is just amazing.  With a plethora of classes, crafts, and adventures, the recreation staff keep the kids busy and make them feel as special as can be.  There are also campfires and a night of bedtime reading with milk and cookies!  From the first moment there, the Cast Members throughout the resort not only call the kids by name, but also engage the guests and the kids in more than just exchanging pleasantries, but in conversation – enhancing both the child’s experience and making him feel special, but also showing that extra little magic guests come to expect from Disney.

And what would a Disney resort be without a good story – or a good story-teller!   While this is a Disney resort, you won’t find Mickey and Goofy.  That doesn’t mean the resort is not without its own story and its own characters.  As the story goes, when Longview Island was being transformed into Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, the Imagineers kept coming across a beautiful – and mischievous – little golden retriever pup.  By the time the resort opened in 1996, the pup had worked her way into not only the hearts of the Cast Members, but also into the story as told throughout the resort.  Upon entry to the villas, note the paw prints embedded in the floor.  Guests also take note of the dog house on the deck in front of the entry where guests who check in on Sunday afternoons may have the chance to get a glimpse of the resort’s Shadow.  The resort also has its very own banjo playin’ story-tellin’ entertainer and conjurer by the name of B’Lou Crabbe.  Guests should not miss the opportunity to sit and listen to him spin a yarn about old Shadow and her adventures in the marsh.  He gives guests the chance to take a stroll with Shadow in search of bunnies and enjoy some brilliantly crafted and fantastically delivered stories.

While the resort has “TIDE ME OVER” – a delightful little outdoor café, there are no restaurants on-site.  Not to worry however, for there are a wide variety of fine dining and restaurants nearby with ocean and marsh views available.  There is also an abundance of shopping – both big chain and small boutique.  The island provides a little something for everyone.  Add in the fact that Historic Savannah, GA is only a 45 minute drive away and you have access to both pop-culture and historical adventures.

So if you are looking for a relaxing, reserved, and incredible vacation getaway, look no further than Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort.  You will enjoy all the comforts of a relaxing vacation with all of the adventures that you can handle – and maybe come up with some of your own stories along the way.
