Happy Veterans Day

Words can not express our gratitude to those who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Military. We honor your great sacrifices to preserve our freedom not only today, but every day!

It’s no secret that Walt Disney was a great patriot. During the design and construction ofย Disneylandยฎ Park, he made sure to showcase that. On a walk down Main Street U.S.A.ยฎ, everyone notices the main flag pole in Town Square but may overlook several other American flags flying high as they continue throughout the rest of the park. A plaque rests at the base of the Town Square flag pole that reads “Disneylandยฎ is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts which have created America.” But probably the most overlooked display of Walt Disney’s patriotism is the late afternoon Flag Retreat ceremony that takes place in Town Square. A tradition since 1955, the ceremony is performed out of respect of our nation’s flag and as a way to honor those who have served our country.

In 2013, we were privileged to spend Veterans Day inside Disneylandยฎ Park and witness a special Flag Retreat ceremony. In observance of the day, Disneylandยฎ Resort Cast Members and guests who are Veterans along with the 1st Division Marine Band from Camp Pendleton served as special guests at the ceremony. You can only imagine the emotion of being surrounded by the Americana feel of Main Street U.S.Aยฎ and the sounds of patriotic tunes like God Bless America, Star Spangled Banner and theย Armed Forces Medley on such an important day.

A Flag Retreat Ceremony is performed daily at both Disneylandยฎ and Magic Kingdomยฎ Parks. Be sure to check your Times Guide and attend during your next visit to the parks.

Trick or Treat: 9 Disney Destination Tricks You May Not Know

Happy Halloween!

Sometimes, having a magical Disney Vacation involves a few tricks! From when to call for Advanced Dining Reservations to how to best utilize Disney FastPass+ service, our expert Magic Makersยฎ know them all!

With Halloween just a day away, we thought we’d treat you to just a few of our favorite Disney tricks:

Walt Disney Worldยฎ Resort

  • With MyMagic+, planning is more important than ever! Previously, your “ADR date” (180 days before travel when you can make dining reservations) was the most important planning date. Now, your “FastPass+ date” is equally important, especially when you are staying at one of the on-property hotels! On-property guests get first access to reserve Disney FastPass+ attractions, shows and more 60 days before you arrive! This advance access can make or break your hopes of getting FastPass+ times for popular attractions like the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. But don’t fret, your Magic Makerยฎ will take care of reminding  you of all these important dates!
  • When making your initial plans, you’ll be able to select up to three FastPass+ experiences for your family each day. But once you redeem your initial selections, you can visit any in-park FastPass+ kiosk and select an additional experience based on availability. After using that one, you can keep repeating that process selecting one more after your previous selections have all been used.
  • Did you know that Epcotยฎ has two entrances? The International Gateway, located between the United Kingdom and France pavilions, allows for easy access to Disney’s Boardwalk and Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts. Here you’ll find great nighttime entertainment as well as some amazing dining choices. Just a quick walk or boat ride from the back entrance to Epcotยฎ, this area is worth exploring.
  • Guests who visited Downtown Disneyยฎ years ago may remember there being more than one bus stop. But now if you are arriving at Disney Springsโ„ข by resort bus, you are dropped off at a bus station in the Marketplace area. You can easily get to other areas via boat service, however the new boat launch area is not very clearly marked. As you are exiting the bus area, you’ll make an immediate right and follow a path that takes you to the Marketplace Dock. If you’ve made it to any of the stores, you’ve gone too far! With all the hustle and bustle of other guests making their way to and from the buses, the path is easy to overlook!

Disneylandยฎ Resort

  • Years after opening, Radiator Springs Racers inside Disney California Adventureยฎ Park is still popular! Want to know how to get early access to Cars Land and the attractions? It’s as simple as staying at one of the three Hotels of the Disneylandยฎ Resort! Only guests of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotelยฎ & Spa, Disneylandยฎ Hotel, and Disney’s Paradise Pierยฎ Hotel can utilize Extra Magic Hour to access Disney California Adventureยฎ Park one hour before scheduled park opening every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
  • Celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or even a first visit? Always remember to ask for a button! While nothing is guaranteed, sometimes magical things happen to those proudly donning a celebration button.

Disney Cruise Line

  • We are often asked when is best to book a Disney Cruise Line vacation. That answer is simple – as early as possible! Unlike other vacation destinations, pricing on Disney Cruise Line typically increases as the ship fills. Early birds can expect great pricing and the best selection of cabin types and locations.
  • Before leaving home, be sure to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App onto your smartphone. While onboard the ship, you can connect to the ship’s wi-fi (which is complimentary for this app) and conveniently access a calendar of events and activities, a deck plan of the ship, and a feature that allows you to message with other guests on your cruise.

New Lands, Experiences and Entertainment Coming to Disney Parks

Earlier today, we told you about a new Star Warsโ„ข-themed land that is coming to both Disneylandยฎ Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studiosยฎย (Click here for more details). Well, we have more exciting news to share about other new lands, entertainment, and experiences coming soon to the domestic Disney Parks.

Here’s a brief recap of what’s to come:

Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studiosยฎ

Get ready to head “to infinity and beyond” as you step into the world of one of Disneyโ€ขPixar’s most famous films, Toy Story! As you enter Toy Story Land, you’ll be shrunk to the size of Woody and Buddy as you wander through Andy’s oversized toys.

The new land will feature two new rides and an expansion of a guest favorite:

  • A family-friendly roller coaster enjoyed on the back of Slinky Dog.
  • Alien saucer attraction in which the little green aliens take guests around for a spin.
  • Addition of a 3rd track for the current Toy Story Maniaยฎ attraction!

Disney’s Animal Kingdomยฎ After Dark and Pandora – The World of AVATAR

As announced previously, work continues on the largest expansion in the parkโ€™s history. Soon, guests will be immersed into the world of Pandora, and the entire park will transform after dark with new nighttime entertainment experiences!

Details of the expansion include:

  • Scheduled to debut in Spring 2016, “Rivers of Light” will bring the Discovery River to life with live music, floating lanterns, swirling animal imagery and water screens unlike anything ever seen in a Disney Park.
  • Kilimanjaro Safarisยฎ will be expanded next Spring to include a new nighttime adventure. Keep watch for two new species to the attraction – African wild dogs and hyenas!
  • Work continues on Pandora – The World of AVATAR. This new land will include floating mountains, a bioluminescent forest, and a new E-ticket attraction called AVATAR Flight of Passage.

Star Warsโ„ข-Themed Lands Coming to Disneylandยฎ and Walt Disney Worldยฎ Resorts

The Walt Disney Company announced that a galaxy far, far away would be coming to a Disney Park near you!

In what is being called Disney’s largest single themed land expansion in history, these new Star Warsโ„ข-themed lands will bring 14 acres of fun to both Disneylandยฎ Park in Anaheim and Disney’s Hollywood Studiosยฎ in Orlando.

Plans call for the land to transport guests to a never-before-seen-planet feature two signature attractions. Inside the land, every store and restaurant will be run by the “locals” of the planet!

No date has been announced for the launch of these new Star Warsโ„ข-themed lands. But in the meantime, new Star Warsโ„ข fun is on the way!

  • Stars Toursยฎ – The Adventures Continue – Later in 2015,ย Star Toursยฎ – The Adventures Continue attractions in both Disneylandยฎ Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studiosยฎ will include a new adventure with locations and characters from the upcoming Star Warsโ„ข: The Force Awakens.
  • Jedi Training Academy โ€“ A current favorite of young Padawans, Jedi Training Academy, will soon be reimagined with a new experience that includes new characters and a new villain to battle from the popular Disney XD series, “Star Wars Rebels.โ€
  • Star Warsโ„ข Launch Bay – Also coming in 2015, this new interactive experience will take guests on both coasts into the upcoming film, Star Warsโ„ข: The Force Awakens. The experience will feature special exhibits, visits with new and favorite Star Warsโ„ข characters, and specialty food and merchandise offerings. Star Warsโ„ข Launch Bay will be located in Tomorrowlandยฎ at Disneylandยฎ Park and inside the Animation Courtyard atย Disney’s Hollywood Studiosยฎ.
  • Season of the Force – Inspired by the success of Star Warsโ„ข Weekends, Season of the Force will be a new season event, beginning early 2016, bringing more intergalactic fun into Disneylandยฎ Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studiosยฎ. At Disneylandยฎ Park, Space Mountainยฎ will be reimagined into Hyperspace Mountain.ย Over atย Disney’s Hollywood Studiosยฎ, they will feature a new fireworks spectacular on weekend nights set to the iconic scores of Star Warsโ„ข movies. Much more fun is in the works as well.

runDisney Event Registration Tips

Every runner is aware of the preparation needed to compete in a race. You can’t just lace up your shoes and go run a marathon! You have months worth of preparation to make sure you are conditioned both mentally and physically and have everything you need to compete.

With runDisney races, that preparation starts with registering for your event. Because these events are so incredibly popular, it’s not uncommon for some races to sell out within hours of registration opening! Your window of opportunity to register for these events can be small, so we have a few tips for you to make it as pain-free as possible.

  • View our listing of upcoming runDisney events and note the registration date and time for the race you are interested in.
  • Because registration requires an active.com account, we suggest you visit the site before registration opens and create one if needed.
  • Because the registration process asks some personal details, it’s easiest for you to fill out the form for yourself. Even if you are participating as a group, it’s best (and quickest) for each of you to register on your own.
  • On registration day, keep an eye on runDisney’s twitter account (@runDisney) for the registration link to be posted as soon as registration opens. This will be your quickest way to access the registration form.
  • If you’re lucky enough to make it right into the queue, you only have 15 minutes to complete your registration before your spot is given up to another person. If you receive an “on hold” message, the queue is full but continue to check back as spots may still open up.

After you receive your registration confirmation, then you can focus on your race preparations and let our expert Magic Makersยฎ handle all the rest of your planning!

Friday, Sep. the 11th will be the official start of Halloween Time at theย Disneylandยฎ Resort! That’s right, get ready for “The Happiest Place on Earth” to get spookier!

The ever popular Mickey’s Halloween Party is returning this year to Disneylandยฎ Park. A separate-ticket event, the party turns the park into a celebration of the season as guests wearing their Halloween costumes join Disney characters dressed up in their own festive attire. The 17-nights of trick-or-treating fun at Mickey’s Halloween Party are:

Nighttime Skies on the 4th of July

Theย Walt Disney Worldยฎ Resort will pixie dust the night skies in celebration of America’s Birthday! Whether watching the patriotic display atย Magic Kingdomยฎ Park, the rock ‘n’ roll spectacular atย Disneyโ€™s Hollywood Studiosยฎ, or one of the shows, you can celebrate the holiday with a real BANG – Disney-style!

  • Magic Kingdomยฎ Park in Florida will present โ€œDisneyโ€™s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky.โ€ย This patriotic fireworks spectacular pays homage to the hopes and dreams of Americaโ€™s forefathers. The spectacular happens twice – July 3rd & 4th at 9p.
  • At Disneyโ€™s Hollywood Studiosยฎ,ย the โ€œCoolest Summer Everโ€ Dance Party leads up to a โ€œRockinโ€™ Fourth of July Celebrationโ€ fireworks show, a pyrotechnic, rock โ€˜n roll trip across America, where the DJ kicks things off at 5:45p and keeps the party going until fireworks time at 10:15p on July 4th.
  • In Epcotยฎ, theย IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth show will be enhanced with a special finale – an overture of traditional Americana themes displayed in a pyrotechnic and laser light event. Please note the special showtime for July 4th is at 10 pm.

Other patriotic activities will be taking place around the Parks and Resorts. The Best Seat in the House

A year and a half ago I finallyย got to check off something that is on nearly every Disneyphile’s bucket-list, a visit to Disneylandยฎ Park in Anaheim.

It was amazing.

We got to walk in Walt’s footsteps down Main Street, U.S.A. We were able to see the bench that Walt sat on when he ‘dreamed up’ this magical place while sitting in Griffith Park. We rode a loop around Disneylandยฎ Park in the Lilly Belle. We were able to see the small Christmas tree lit in the window of Walt’s apartment.

For a Disney nerd like me, it was all so surreal.

We spent 7 days at Disneylandยฎ Resort; immersed in Disneylandยฎ Park, Disney California Adventureยฎ and the resorts. I took a back-stage tour in Disneylandยฎ Park and enjoyed an amazing dining experience at Carthay Circle Restaurant. Our group had private access to Cars Land and Radiator Springs Racers prior to the park opening one morning.

It was a dream trip.

Of all of the amazing experiences we had, by far my favorite moment of the trip was sitting on the ground, as a family, in Disney California Adventure Parkยฎ eating dinner next to a row of dirty strollers.

It was magical.

Disney California Adventure Parkยฎ has a remarkable show called World of Color. It is a fantastic display of lights, water, projection and fire; all orchestrated in a way only Disney can do.

To ensure that we had the best spot possible without a FastPass, we set up camp about an hour and a half prior to the show in a stroller ‘parking lot’. Once we set up camp, I trekked across the park to hunt down and drag home ‘supper’ for my family.

Up until this point our entire trip had been non-stop. Meals were rushed. Bathroom breaks were rushed. Snacks were rushed. All in a pursuit of conquering all that we could while we were at Disneylandยฎ Resort.

So, following 7 days of intensity, here we sat as a family, dining on paper plates with plastic utensils…on the ground…in the middle of a theme park. This was our last night at Disneylandยฎ Resort.

Our view consisted of the white rails in front of us, the dirty strollers beside us, and the knees and shins of other families pushing on with the same intensity we used all week.

We were together. We were talking and reflecting. We were still.

It was good, it was real good.

As we talked, we all recollected our favorite things we’d seen or done over the week. Our five year old was very quick to announce that sitting on the ground eating together was one of his favorite ‘things’ we did on our trip.

We exposed him to so many things that many five year olds would have loved to have done. He was on a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip by many families’ standards. He met the Fab 5, he rode all the rides he wanted, he drank way too much coke and ate way too much sugar.

Still, his standout, was sitting on the ground, as a family. Eating. Sharing. Laughing.

It was ours too. It was the best seat in the house.

Sometimes we try toย packย so many experiences and things into a Disney Destination trip to bring our children joy; when all they really want to do is be still with their mommy and daddy. The trip was great, and he had a blast no doubt; but to him, it was much greater to just ‘be’ with mommy and daddy a while.

To eat off of a dirty ground with plastic utensils.

To laugh and to share.

To be a family.

We can all get wrapped up in the countless things there are to do at Disney Destinations that we completely miss the special moments we get to share with those we love in front of a magical backdrop.

Our best advice to you on your next trip?

Slow down, relax, embrace and enjoy everything from the best seat in the house; in the moment right where you are at.

After all, it is the most magical place on Earth!
