Disney’s Art of Animation Resort to open May 31

The Walt Disney World® Resort’s newest resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is currently scheduled to start opening in phases beginning on May 31, 2012.

Located near Disney’s Pop Century Resort, the new resort will offer 1,120 family suites (including a bedroom and living room) themed after “The Lion King,” “Cars” and “Finding Nemo” animated films. The family suites are designed to comfortably accomodate up to six guests. Each suite includes two separate bathrooms, a master bedroom, and three separate sleeping areas within the living space.

There will also be 864 standard guest rooms inspired by “The Little Mermaid.” The current opening timetable has the “Finding Nemo” wing opening May 31, the “Cars” wing in late July, and “The Lion King” wing in late September. The final wing, themed after “The Little Mermaid,” is scheduled to debut in December 2012.

Although Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is still several months away from opening, it’s already set to break records by planning the largest swimming pool at the Walt Disney World® Resort (aside from the water parks). This pool will be located in the “Finding Nemo” wing, and will measure 11,859 square feet. The resort also will feature two other pools and a children’s water play area.

Meet Jake from Jake and the Never Land Pirates

Little fans of “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” now have the opportunity for some swashbuckling fun at the Disney Parks! Jake, from the popular Disney Junior show, will begin greeting guests this month at both the Disneyland® Resort and the Walt Disney World® Resort.

Starting today (November 13), Jake will be making regular appearances at Disney’s Hollywood Studios™ at the Walt Disney World® Resort. He joins Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso and June from “Little Einsteins” at the Disney Junior Play ‘n Dine at the Hollywood & Vine restaurant on Disney’s Hollywood Studios‘ Hollywood Boulevard. Guests at the character dining experience will be able to get into the action by swabbing the deck, rowing the boat and shouting “yo ho” to songs from the show, including “Roll Up the Map,” “Hot Lava” and “Talk Like a Pirate.”

Jake will join the Stars of Disney Junior at their meet and greet location in the Animation Courtyard. In order to make way for Jake, the Little Einsteins will no longer appear at that location.

Jake fans visiting the Disneyland® Resort will also be able to meet their favorite little pirate beginning November 20, along Hollywood Boulevard at Disney California Adventure® park.

Guests visiting both parks can also see Jake, Izzy, Cubby, and Skully as the sneak up on Captain Hook and Mr. Smee at the Disney Junior- Live on Stage show. The little pirates from Jake and the Never Land Pirates join Mickey and gang, the Little Einsteins, and Handy Manny and his tools in this fun, interactive show geared just for preschoolers.

Be sure to check daily entertainment guides for show times, character greeting times and locations. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is a hard-ticket* event that takes place after the Magic Kingdom® Park closes. Enjoy snow falling on Main Street U.S.A., special holiday entertainment, additional character meet-and-greets, complimentary cookies and hot cocoa, and a performance of Holiday Wishes: Celebrate the Spirit of the Season fireworks.

This year, Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade will feature an appearance by Duffy the Disney Bear and a special appearance by Santa Claus, himself. Be sure to catch the enchanted Cinderella’s Holiday Wish stage show, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald, Goofy, Pluto and Cinderella appear to admire the lovely holiday decorations at the park. Then they share their ideas on how to decorate Cinderella Castle for the season. The Fairy Godmother covers the castle in glittering ice, making it look just like her special glass slippers.

The Disney Villians light up the night sky in the Happy Hallowishes fireworks. Don’t forget to catch your favorite characters in their costumes. Haunted Carriage Rides
Roam the woods of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground on a 25-minute Haunted Carriage Ride while hearing the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Reservations are needed to participate in this spooky experience.

Delicious Halloween Treats
Throughout the entire resort, feast on delicious treats created just for this time of the year. Pumpkin spice funnel cakes, pumpkin fudge and cheesecake, and Halloween-themed cookies and baked goods. Some of your favorite characters are recreated as caramel apples during the Halloween season!

Happy 40th Birthday to the Walt Disney World Resort

On this day in 1971, the world changed forever with the opening of the Walt Disney World® Resort in central Florida. Since opening day, millions and millions of guests have been treated to a “fantasy made real” that only the Disney company can make happen. Even though Walt Disney did not live to see his “Florida Project” become reality, his spirit and imagination live on in the forty seven square miles that make up the Walt Disney World® Resort. Just a few days after opening day, at the grand opening celebration, Roy O. Disney read the words inscribed on the Walt Disney World® Resort dedication plaque:

Walt Disney World is a tribute to the philosophy and life of Walter Elias Disney . . . and to the talents, the dedication and the loyalty of the entire Disney organization that made Walt Disney’s dream come true. May Walt Disney World bring Joy and Inspiration and New Knowledge to all who come to this happy place . . . a Magic Kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn – together.

Making Wishes Sweeter

Last April, I surprised my family and instead of watching Wishes® Nighttime Spectacular with the throngs of people in front of Cinderella Castle. I made reservations for the seven of us for the Tomorrowland Terrace Fireworks Dessert Party.

We checked in at the podium about an hour before Wishes® Nighttime Spectacular was scheduled to begin. We were greeted and then escorted to our own private table set up on the terrace with a perfect view of the castle. Our table was decorated with Mickey confetti and even had a little sign welcoming us with our names printed on it. Our delightful server, Michelle, invited us at our leisure to help ourselves to the dessert buffet and to ‘eat our fill’.

My boys’ eyes became as large as saucers as they saw a huge buffet table filled with so many wonderful and delightful desserts. They were all arranged beautifully on the buffet . The buffet was covered with chocolate covered strawberries, rice krispie treats, pistachio creme brûlée, banana cream tartlets, mini key lime pies, cannelloni, mini cupcakes, and white chocolate and milk chocolate cheesecake. There was also coffee, juice, ice tea, hot tea, milk and water available at the beverage station.

The plates they give you just aren’t big enough to try them all, so return trips to the buffet are required. As our family devoured these wonderful desserts we had a nice view of Disney’s Main Street Electrical Parade moving down Main Street, U.S.A.®. A Disney PhotoPass photographer set up on the terrace to take pictures of groups and families in front of the castle.

When it was time for Wishes® Nighttime Spectacular to begin, the lights dimmed and we turned our chairs toward the castle and had one of the most wonderful views of the fireworks show. At one point during the fireworks, Tinker Bell flies from the castle and comes directly toward the Terrace, I think we thought she was going to land in our laps!

After the firework show we were not rushed off of the terrace and into the throngs of departing guests. Rather we were encouraged to hang out and enjoy the nice views of the castle, finish up our desserts and take some more pictures. The perfect ending to a magical day at the Walt Disney World® Resort.

This was one of those experiences that my family has not forgotten, we talk about it often and know for sure that we will be enjoying this experience again on our next trip to the Magic Kingdom® Park.
